Installing new mast and rigging - making it a bomber ocean vessel

June 2023, Nord Hus gets its first taste of Lake Superior. Ready for its first navigation to home port of Grand Marais

The summer of 2023 was a bout retrofitting Nord Hus to be fit for the harsh realities of high latitude sailing.  The boat was motored from its overwinter marina of Knife River to its home port of Grand Marais.

Here, it was overhauled with a new lighter mast - one that can withstand the rough seas of the Arctic. All its standing and running rigging was replaced and beefed up too. The day we lifted the mast and raised the main sail was quite a milestone!

The beauty is that all this work was done on the shores of Lake Superior at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais. Students, experts, and new friends all helped transform it into the robust boat that it is now. What an organic way to learn and connect with the vessel that will soon share with us incredible experiences.

Basic electronics were added, and the entire electrical wiring was checked out for full functionality.  Electrical 101… ouf!

It's kinda different to know a boat inside and out without yet knowing how to sail :)

Feeling more confident that if something breaks out there, we'll have a good idea of how to fix it!
